This guide explains listing terms and practical comparisons. Current product specifications and the selected variant describe the item being ordered. Our editorial approach.

Pearl luster, also spelled lustre, describes the character of reflected light. Look at both brightness and reflection clarity when comparing pearls; a very bright photograph alone is not enough to assess a piece.

How to compare pearl luster online

GIA describes stronger luster in terms of bright, more distinct reflections, while weaker luster has softer, less defined reflections. Compare within a pearl type and consider the other quality factors as well.

Use the following process to make your comparison more consistent. It is a shopping checklist, not a laboratory grading method.

  1. Start with the same pearl type. Open two comparable listings and note the stated pearl type and size. Avoid using one dramatic photograph as the standard for an unrelated piece.
  2. Compare similar views. Use close-ups for both pieces, then step back to the full jewelry view. Check whether the feature you noticed is still visible across the gallery.
  3. Look beyond the brightest highlight. Examine the surrounding reflection and whether details remain visible. If a photo is too small to answer your question, request another view rather than assigning a grade yourself.
  4. Read the written luster description. Record the exact wording used by each seller. Do not silently translate one seller's High into another seller's Excellent.
  5. Ask about missing information. Send the product links and explain the comparison you are trying to make. A useful request is for comparable lighting and camera angles.

Luster vs surface, color and seller grade

On smaller screens, swipe the table horizontally to compare all columns.

Listing detail What to compare A question to ask
Luster The stated reflection description and the available close-ups. Can I see another view under comparable lighting?
Surface The listed amount of blemishing and its visibility in photos. Where are the visible marks on the piece?
Color The stated color and any treatment disclosure. Is the color treatment status stated for this listing?
Seller grade The seller's own classification and attribute breakdown. Which listed attributes support this letter grade?

A pearl can have high luster and visible blemishes at the same time. Review those fields separately. Likewise, a product labeled AAA does not provide a measured nacre thickness unless that measurement is separately supplied. Read our grading methodology for the scope of AKWAYA's seller grades.

Read luster alongside real product specifications

The following examples show how our listings combine luster with other details. They are not side-by-side laboratory comparisons or a promise that two pieces will look identical.

Questions to resolve before ordering

If you are choosing between two products, send both links to AKWAYA. Include the luster wording you want clarified, the size you are considering and whether a close-up of a particular pearl would help. Ask about the actual piece if uniform appearance across a pair or strand is your priority.

If treatment, nacre measurements or an independent report are essential to your purchase, check whether those details are explicitly supplied. An unstated attribute should remain unknown until it is confirmed.

Choose the design as well as the luster

For a finished jewelry comparison, add the pearl shape guide, pearl size guide and price and value guide to your checklist. The pearl buying guide brings those decisions together.
